Back to sectors

India's power generation sector is the backbone of industrial and economic growth — installed capacity of 440+ GW (2024), targeting 800+ GW by 2030. The sector is undergoing a massive transition: thermal (coal/gas) dominates today but renewable (solar/wind) is growing fastest. NTPC (India's largest generator) and private players like Adani Power, Tata Power, and JSW Energy are the key listed companies.

Sector Map

Power Generation
Thermal (Coal) 55% of capacity
NTPC, Adani Power, Tata Power JSW Energy, CESC
Renewable (Solar + Wind) 35% and growing fast
NTPC Green, Adani Green ReNew (US-listed), Tata Power Solar
Hydro 12% of capacity
NHPC, SJVN
Nuclear 2-3% — NPCIL (unlisted)
Gas-based Small, stranded assets

Key Concept: Regulated Returns

Most power generators earn a regulated ROE (15.5% on equity under CERC norms). This means: returns are PREDICTABLE but CAPPED. You won't get 25-30% ROE — but you also won't get 5% ROE. Think of power generation as a "bond + growth" investment: stable returns + capacity addition = compounding at 12-15% CAGR.

1. Power Generation — Industry Overview

India's Power Capacity (2024)

Source Capacity (GW) Share Growth Outlook
Coal (thermal) 210+ 48% Growing slowly (30-40 GW by 2030)
Solar 85+ 19% FASTEST (target: 300 GW by 2030)
Wind 47+ 11% Moderate (target: 100 GW by 2030)
Large Hydro 47+ 11% Slow (long gestation)
Gas 25+ 6% Stagnant (fuel economics poor)
Nuclear 8+ 2% Slow but growing
Biomass/Small Hydro/Others 15+ 3% Niche
Total 440+ 100% 800+ GW target by 2030

Energy Transition at a Glance

India 2024 Coal: 75% of generation
India 2030 Target Coal: 55%, RE: 35%
India 2047 Target Net Zero? RE: 60%+

Demand Growth — The Structural Tailwind

$$\text{Peak Demand (2024)} \approx 240 \text{ GW} \quad \text{vs} \quad \text{Peak Demand (2030)} \approx 350-400 \text{ GW}$$

Demand Driver Growth Contribution
Industrial growth (manufacturing, PLI factories) 30-35%
Urbanisation (AC penetration, new housing) 25-30%
Data centres + AI infrastructure 10-15% (fastest growing)
EV charging 5-10% (emerging)
Agriculture (irrigation electrification) 10-15%

India needs 50-60 GW of new capacity EVERY YEAR until 2030 to meet demand. This guarantees business for power generators.

Revenue Model (Regulated Generation)

$$\text{Tariff} = \text{Fixed Charge (capacity)} + \text{Variable Charge (fuel pass-through)}$$

Component What It Covers Risk
Fixed charge Capital recovery + regulated ROE (15.5%) Low — guaranteed if available
Variable charge Fuel cost (coal/gas) — pass-through Very Low — cost passed to buyer
Incentive If PLF > normative threshold Upside

Key insight: Regulated generators earn money by being AVAILABLE (capacity charge), not just by generating. Even if demand is low, they earn the fixed charge.

Thermal vs Renewable Business Models

Feature Thermal (Coal) Renewable (Solar/Wind)
Revenue model Fixed + variable (regulated) PPA tariff (₹/kWh for 25 years)
Fuel cost Pass-through (low risk) Zero (sun/wind free)
Capital cost ₹6-8 Cr/MW ₹4-5 Cr/MW (solar declining)
PLF 65-80% 20-25% (solar), 30-35% (wind)
Operating cost High (fuel, ash, labour) Very Low (minimal maintenance)
Revenue visibility 25-year PPA 25-year PPA
Growth runway Limited (ESG, policy shift) Massive (govt target: 500 GW RE)

Power Generation Ka India Context

"India power sector mein invest karne ke liye yeh samjho: (1) India power DEFICIT country hai — demand > supply in peak hours. Yeh structural tailwind hai sabke liye. (2) Thermal (coal) = CASH COW today. NTPC/Adani Power 65-80% PLF pe chal rahe hain, regulated returns earn kar rahe hain. Coal will stay relevant for 15-20 years (India can't transition overnight). (3) Renewable = GROWTH engine. Solar costs 90% gir chuke hain since 2010. Every new MW added is solar/wind. NTPC Green, Adani Green = future growth. (4) Problem: regulated returns = capped returns. NTPC 15.5% ROE earn karta hai (fixed by CERC). Isliye power stocks 12-15% annual returns dete hain, not 25-30%. (5) Power stocks = DEFENSIVE + moderate growth. Portfolio mein 5-8% allocation suitable hai — capital preservation + dividend + moderate appreciation." (India is power DEFICIT — demand > supply (structural tailwind). Thermal = cash cow today (relevant 15-20 years). Renewable = growth engine (costs down 90% since 2010). Problem: regulated returns = capped (15.5% ROE). Power stocks give 12-15% annual returns, not 25-30%. Defensive + moderate growth — 5-8% portfolio allocation suitable.)
