Niche > Broad in Telecom Services

Big telcos (Jio, Airtel) dominate consumer broadband and mobile. The investable opportunities in "other telecom services" are niche platform plays — Affle (mobile ads), Tanla (CPaaS messaging), Tata Comm (enterprise). These companies own a specific tech layer that telcos cannot easily replicate, giving them pricing power despite being small relative to Jio/Airtel.

1. Other Telecom Services — Industry Overview

Sub-Segment Breakdown

Other Telecom Services
Broadband ISPs ₹30,000 Cr market
JioFiber dominates Regional ISPs survive in pockets
CPaaS/VAS Platforms ₹15,000 Cr market
Tanla, Affle, Route Mobile Platform economics
Enterprise Connectivity ₹40,000 Cr market
Tata Comm, Airtel Business MPLS/SD-WAN/SASE
CDN/Edge Services ₹5,000 Cr market
Akamai, CtrlS, Sify Content delivery

Business Model Types

Model Revenue Margin Example
Subscription ISP Monthly ARPU × subscribers 15-25% EBITDA Hathway, DEN
Platform (CPaaS) Volume × per-transaction fee 15-25% EBITDA Tanla Platforms
Mobile advertising Cost-per-converted-user (CPCU) 25-35% EBITDA Affle (India)
Enterprise managed services Annual contracts + bandwidth 20-30% EBITDA Tata Communications
Data centre / hosting Rack rent + power + services 30-45% EBITDA Sify Technologies

Broadband ISP Landscape

Provider Subscribers ARPU Model Threat Level from Jio
JioFiber 12M+ ₹600-800 FTTH aggressive pricing N/A (IS Jio)
Airtel Xstream 7M+ ₹700-900 FTTH + bundled DTH/mobile Low (well-funded)
BSNL Fiber 4M+ ₹400-600 FTTH slow rollout Medium (govt)
ACT Fibernet 2M+ ₹600-800 City-focused FTTH (unlisted) High
Hathway/DEN 1M+ ₹400-500 Legacy cable + broadband Very High (Jio owns)

ISPs = Mostly Dead as Investment Theme

Post-Jio disruption, independent broadband ISPs are a dying breed. JioFiber's aggressive pricing (₹399/month for 30Mbps) has destroyed pricing power for smaller ISPs. Hathway and DEN are now Jio subsidiaries. ACT is private. BSNL is government. The broadband ISP space is NOT investable for retail — look at platform plays instead.

CPaaS / VAS Platforms (The Investable Space)

Company What It Does Revenue Model Moat
Tanla Platforms Business-to-consumer messaging (SMS/WhatsApp) Per-message commission Platform connecting 100K+ enterprises to telcos
Affle (India) Mobile user acquisition via targeted ads CPCU (pay per converted user) AI/ML targeting + fraud detection
Route Mobile Cloud communication platform (SMS, voice, email) Per-transaction Multi-channel API platform
OnMobile Ringback tones + music streaming for telcos Revenue share with operators Legacy, declining

Telecom Services Mein Platform Soch

"Telecom services mein paisa woh companies banayengi jo platform banakar baith gayi hain — Tanla har ek SMS delivery pe commission leti hai (billions of messages/month), Affle har ek mobile app install pe commission leti hai, Route Mobile har ek WhatsApp business message pe commission. Ye sab 'toll-on-digital-traffic' businesses hain — jitna traffic badhega, utna revenue. ISP banne ki koshish mat karo, platform bano." (In telecom services, money will be made by companies that have built platforms — Tanla takes commission on every SMS delivery (billions of messages/month), Affle takes commission on every mobile app install, Route Mobile takes commission on every WhatsApp business message. These are all 'toll-on-digital-traffic' businesses — more traffic, more revenue. Don't try to be an ISP, be a platform.)
