Back to sectors

Offshore drilling and support services is India's most CYCLICAL oil & gas sub-sector. Companies own drilling rigs, jack-ups, offshore supply vessels (OSVs), and provide marine logistics to ONGC/Oil India for their offshore operations. When oil prices are HIGH → exploration budgets rise → day rates spike → these companies mint money. When oil is LOW → contracts dry up → massive losses and debt distress.

Key Listed Players

Company Business Revenue (₹ Cr) Market Cap (₹ Cr) Status

HIGH-RISK Sector — Not for Beginners

Offshore drilling is EXTREMELY cyclical, capital-intensive, and debt-heavy. Aban Offshore went from ₹5,000+ stock to ₹50 (98% destruction). Only for experienced investors who understand oil cycles and can time entries. Most retail investors should AVOID this sector entirely.

India's Offshore Market

Metric Value
India offshore oil production ~15 MT/year (declining — mature fields)
ONGC offshore production 80%+ of India's offshore output
ONGC capex (annual) ₹30,000-35,000 Cr
% going to offshore contractors 30-40% (₹10,000-14,000 Cr)
Key basins Mumbai High (mature), KG Basin (deep water), Rajasthan (onshore)

India's offshore market is ONGC-DOMINATED. 70-80% of offshore drilling contracts in India come from ONGC. If ONGC cuts capex → entire Indian offshore services industry suffers.

Types of Offshore Services

Service Type What It Does Key Indian Players Day Rate Range
Jack-up Rigs Drill in shallow water (< 120m depth) Aban, Jindal Drilling $60,000-120,000/day
Semi-submersibles Drill in medium-deep water (120-1500m) None (India hires internationally) $200,000-400,000/day
Drillships Drill in ultra-deep water (> 1500m) None (hire from Transocean etc.) $300,000-500,000/day
OSVs (Offshore Supply Vessels) Ferry supplies to rigs GE Shipping, Reliance Naval (defunct) $8,000-20,000/day
MSVs (Multi Support Vessels) Construction, pipe-lay, diving Seamec $30,000-80,000/day
Diving & ROV services Subsea inspection, maintenance Seamec Project-based
Gas compression Onshore gas well optimization Deep Industries Project-based

Revenue Model

$$\text{Revenue} = \text{Day Rate} \times \text{Operating Days} \times \text{Number of Rigs/Vessels}$$

$$\text{Utilisation %} = \frac{\text{Operating Days}}{\text{Total Available Days (365)}} \times 100$$

Utilisation Revenue Impact
> 90% Excellent — all assets deployed
75-90% Good
60-75% Below par — some rigs idle
< 60% Distressed — massive idle assets eating depreciation + debt service

Cost Structure (Capital Intensive)

Component % of Revenue Notes
Depreciation 25-35% Rigs cost $100-300 Mn each, depreciated over 20-25 years
Debt service (interest) 15-25% Rigs financed 70-80% by debt
Crew & operations 20-30% Skilled rig crew expensive
Maintenance + dry docking 10-15% Mandatory every 5 years
Total 85-100% Very thin margins in normal times

$$\text{Breakeven Day Rate} = \frac{\text{Fixed Costs (depreciation + debt + crew)}}{365 \text{ days}} \approx $40,000-60,000/\text{day for jack-ups}$$

When day rates > $80,000 → these companies print money. When day rates < $50,000 → they bleed cash and pile up debt.

The Cycle

↻ Repeats
Oil Price > $80
E&P Companies Increase Capex
Rig Demand Rises
Day Rates Spike $80-120k/day
Offshore Companies PROFITABLE Stock rallies 5-10x
New Rigs Ordered Supply increases
Oil Price Falls < $60
E&P Cut Capex
Rig Demand Crashes
Day Rates Collapse $30-50k/day
Offshore Companies DEBT DISTRESS Stock crashes 80-90%

This cycle runs 7-10 years peak-to-peak. Last upcycle: 2005-2014. Last downcycle: 2014-2021. Current: EARLY UPCYCLE (2022 onwards).

Offshore Drilling Ka Reality Check

"Offshore drilling is the MOST DANGEROUS sector for retail investors. Here's why: (1) LEVERAGE — rigs cost $100-300 Million EACH. Companies take 70-80% debt. One bad cycle = bankruptcy. Aban Offshore had ₹8,000 Cr debt on ₹1,500 Cr revenue at cycle bottom. Debt/equity was 10x+. (2) SINGLE CLIENT RISK — In India, ONGC = 70-80% of your revenue. If ONGC delays a contract → you have a $150M rig sitting idle, earning ZERO, while you pay $40K/day in crew + debt service. (3) BINARY OUTCOMES — When oil is at $90+, these stocks can go 5-10x in 2-3 years. When oil crashes to $40 → same stocks lose 80-90%. There's no 'steady 15% return' here. It's BOOM or BUST. (4) WHO SHOULD INVEST: ONLY people who (a) understand oil price cycles, (b) can time entry at cycle bottoms (when stocks are at all-time lows and sentiment is terrible), (c) can stomach 50%+ drawdowns even in an upcycle, (d) size position at 3-5% of portfolio MAX. For everyone else: AVOID. Buy Castrol for oil sector exposure instead (steady, predictable, no debt). If you MUST play offshore: Deep Industries is the SAFEST (onshore focused, less leverage, growing). Aban/Jindal are pure cycle bets." (Most DANGEROUS sector: (1) Leverage (rigs $100-300M, 70-80% debt). (2) Single client (ONGC = 70-80%). (3) Binary (5-10x upside OR 80-90% destruction). (4) Only for experts who understand oil cycles. Everyone else: AVOID. Safest: Deep Industries. Aban/Jindal = pure cycle bets.)
