News is a Cyclical Business — Elections = Ad Boom

TV news advertising spikes 30-50% during elections (state or general) and cricket seasons. FY24 was a DOUBLE-WHAMMY year (T20 World Cup + Lok Sabha elections) — great for news channels. FY26 may have state elections but no national event → normalisation. Always adjust earnings for cyclicality.

Electronic Media Ka Investment Reality

"News media mein invest karna = CYCLICALITY samajhna. Here's the truth: (1) Aaj Tak/TV Today Network is the BEST news media business in India — #1 for 20+ years, 30%+ margins, ₹450+ Cr cash on books, and trades at just 15-18x PE. It's actually CHEAP for a market leader. (2) BUT earnings are LUMPY — election years are GREAT (FY24: +25-30% ad revenue), non-election years are FLAT. Don't extrapolate one good year. (3) NDTV is now an Adani subsidiary — corporate governance concerns (will it be run for profit or political influence?). Avoid unless you trust Adani's media strategy. (4) Digital news is growing 20%+ but NOBODY has figured out how to make REAL money from it in India. Scroll shut down. Quint burns cash. NDTV digital still small. The MONETISATION gap between TV news (high CPM) and digital news (low CPM) persists. (5) Overall: TV Today Network is a small, boring, cash-generative business. Good for value investors. Not a growth story. Not exciting. But cheap." (TV Today Network = best news business. #1 for 20+ years, 30%+ margins, ₹450 Cr cash, 15-18x PE = CHEAP. But earnings LUMPY (election years great, non-election flat). NDTV = Adani subsidiary (governance risk). Digital news growing but nobody making money from it. TV Today = value pick for patient investors.)
