Coal is India's DOMINANT energy source (55%+ of power generation) and will remain so for at least 15-20 more years despite renewable growth. Coal India Ltd (CIL) is a PSU MONOPOLY producing 80%+ of India's coal — the world's largest coal producer by volume. It's a high-dividend, low-growth stock that benefits from India's insatiable power demand.
Key Listed Players

Coal India = India's Dividend Machine
CIL has distributed ₹1.5+ Lakh Cr in dividends over the past decade. At current yields of 5-7%, it's one of India's best CASH RETURN investments. The key question is not "will CIL survive?" (it will, for 20+ years) but "at what price does the dividend yield + modest growth justify buying?"
1. Coal — Industry Overview
India's Coal Dependency
| Metric | Value | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Coal share in power generation | 55%+ | Down from 75% but still dominant |
| Total coal demand | 1,100+ MT/year | Growing 5-6% annually |
| Coal India production | 770+ MT | 80%+ of domestic output |
| Coal imports | 250+ MT/year | Coking coal + shortfall supplementation |
| Power sector demand | 700+ MT | 65% of total coal demand |
| Non-power (steel, cement, industry) | 400+ MT | 35% |
$$\text{Coal share declining?} \to \text{NO. ABSOLUTE demand is growing. Share in % terms declining but TONNES increasing.}$$
Coal India — The Monopoly
MCL (Mahanadi) and SECL (South Eastern) together produce 55%+ of CIL's output — these are the profit engines.
Revenue Model
$$\text{Revenue} = \text{FSA Volume} \times \text{FSA Price} + \text{E-Auction Volume} \times \text{E-Auction Price}$$
| Channel | Volume Share | Price (₹/tonne) | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| FSA (Fuel Supply Agreement) — regulated | 80-85% | ₹1,400-1,800 | Moderate |
| E-Auction (market-linked) | 15-20% | ₹2,500-5,000+ | Very high |
E-auction premium = key profit lever. In tight supply: e-auction prices spike 2-3x FSA → CIL profits SOAR. In surplus: e-auction premium shrinks → profits normalise.
Cost Structure
| Component | ₹/tonne | % of Revenue |
|---|---|---|
| Employee cost | ₹600-700 | 35-40% (HIGHEST — PSU legacy workforce) |
| Overburden removal | ₹200-300 | 12-15% |
| Contractors + outsourcing | ₹200-250 | 12-15% |
| Diesel + explosives | ₹100-150 | 8-10% |
| Royalties + cess | ₹150-200 | 10-12% |
| Total cost/tonne | ₹1,300-1,600 | |
| Avg realisation/tonne | ₹1,800-2,200 | |
| EBITDA/tonne | ₹400-600 |
CIL's biggest cost = EMPLOYEES (35-40% of revenue). 2,50,000+ workforce — heavily unionised, guaranteed pension. This makes cost structure RIGID.
Demand Guarantee (Why Coal Won't Die Soon)
| Fact | Data |
|---|---|
| India adding 50+ GW thermal capacity (under construction) | Even AFTER committing to renewables |
| Power demand growing 7-8% annually | Fastest in the world |
| Renewable intermittency | Coal needed for baseload (24x7 power) |
| Battery storage too expensive | At scale, still 5-10 years away |
| Steel/cement need coking coal | No substitute at current scale |
India will burn MORE coal in absolute terms through 2035 at minimum. Peak coal demand: ~2035-2040.
Coal India Ka Investment Story
"Coal India is India ka SIMPLEST large-cap investment case: (1) MONOPOLY — 80% of India's coal. No competition (commercial mining just starting, tiny volumes). Government NEEDS CIL to keep power plants running. CIL can't fail (strategic national asset). (2) CASH MACHINE — at ₹500-600/tonne EBITDA on 770 MT → ₹40,000-50,000 Cr EBITDA. After tax + capex: ₹25,000-30,000 Cr free cash flow annually. That's 9-10% FCF yield on current market cap! (3) DIVIDEND — government needs CIL dividends (63% stake → gets 63% of dividends = ₹10,000-15,000 Cr income to exchequer). So CIL WILL keep paying 50-60% dividends. At current price: 5-7% yield. (4) The CATCH: ZERO growth narrative. Production growing only 5-6%. Revenue growing only 7-8%. It's not a 20% compounder. Market assigns 7-9x PE because 'coal is dying.' But coal in India is NOT dying for 15-20 more years. At 7x PE + 6% yield → you're getting a MONOPOLY cash machine for the price of a distressed company. THAT'S the opportunity. Buy at yields > 6%. Hold for 3-5 years. Total return = 6% dividend + 5-8% modest growth = 11-14% annually. Not exciting. But SAFE and RELIABLE." (Simplest large-cap: MONOPOLY (80% production), CASH MACHINE (₹40,000-50,000 Cr EBITDA, 9-10% FCF yield), DIVIDEND (5-7% yield, government needs it). Catch: zero growth (5-6%). Market says "coal dying" (7x PE) but India burns MORE coal for 15-20 years. Buy >6% yield. Total return 11-14% annually. Safe, reliable.)
