What are the Notes?

The Notes to Accounts (30-80 pages) provide the detail behind every line item in the financial statements.

🗣️

"P&L aur Balance Sheet mein jo numbers dikhte hain, notes mein unka full breakdown hota hai."

Key notes to always read

1. Accounting Policies (Note 1-2)

  • Revenue recognition policy — when does the company recognise revenue?
  • Depreciation method — straight-line vs written-down value?
  • Inventory valuation — FIFO, weighted average?

2. Revenue Breakup

  • Segment-wise revenue (by business line or geography)
  • Product vs service revenue

3. Property, Plant & Equipment

  • Gross block, additions, disposals
  • Accumulated depreciation
  • Net block

4. Borrowings

  • Types of loans (term loans, working capital, debentures)
  • Interest rates
  • Maturity schedule
  • Security (what's pledged as collateral)

5. Trade Receivables Ageing

  • How old are the receivables? 0-6 months, 6-12 months, > 1 year?
  • Receivables > 1 year old may be doubtful

6. Related Party Disclosures

  • List of related parties and nature of relationship
  • Value of each transaction type
  • Outstanding balances

7. Contingent Liabilities

  • Tax demands, legal cases, guarantees given
  • These are potential liabilities not yet on the balance sheet

Start with 3 notes

Don't try to read all 80 pages. Start with: Borrowings, Trade Receivables Ageing, and Related Party Disclosures. These reveal the most about risk.

Key takeaway

The notes contain the detail that headlines miss. Developing the habit of reading key notes separates serious investors from headline readers.
