What is Revenue?

Revenue = the money a company earns from its core business operations.

🗣️

"Revenue matlab company ne apne main kaam se kitna paisa kamaya."

In IndAS terms, you'll see:

  • Revenue from Operations — core business income
  • Other Income — interest on deposits, dividend income, one-time gains

Revenue from Operations vs Total Income

Line item What it includes
Revenue from Operations Sales of products + services
Other Income Interest, dividends, forex gains, asset sale profits
Total Income Revenue from Operations + Other Income

Focus on Revenue from Operations

Other Income can be lumpy and one-time. Revenue from Operations shows the real business momentum.

What to look for

  1. Growth rate — is revenue growing? (check 3-5 year CAGR)
  2. Consistency — is growth steady or erratic?
  3. Source — is it from the core business or one-time items?

On InvestingSamjho

Open any company's entity page and try these:

  1. Financial Statements → Annual Results — look at "Revenue from Operations" across years
  2. Metrics Explorer → Growth preset — see the revenue growth rate charted over time (saves you from manually calculating YoY!)
  3. Screener — you can filter the entire universe by revenue growth: try Revenue Growth (1Y) > 15% to find fast-growers
  4. Compare (/compare) — compare revenue growth of 2 companies in the same sector

Platform shortcut: Metrics Explorer

The Growth preset in Metrics Explorer shows revenue growth rate pre-computed. No need to manually calculate from raw numbers — the platform does it for you. But you should understand what the number means.

Real example: TCS

Year Revenue from Ops (₹ Cr) YoY Growth
FY22 1,91,754 +16.8%
FY23 2,25,458 +17.6%
FY24 2,40,893 +6.8%

Revenue growing consistently but growth rate slowed — that's a signal worth investigating.

Key takeaway

Revenue is the foundation. Without revenue growth, nothing else matters. "Revenue nahi toh kuch nahi."
